SAFETY COMMISSION URGES STAKEHOLDERS IN BUILDING INDUSTRY TO ADOPT BEST PRACTICES FOR SAFETY

The Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola has implored stakeholders and practitioners in the built sector to adopt best practices for Safety.

Mojola gave the advice in his address at a one-day training programme tagged: “Standard Working Procedures”, organised for workers in the iron and steel sector by the state government, adding that the training was necessary to avert incidents of building collapse leading to loss of lives across the State.

The Director-General, who was represented at the event by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Taiwo Fesomu said that the state government has zero tolerance for sharp practices, as such, illegal activities would not be tolerated in the sector by the present administration.

“The forum is designed to encourage workers in the iron and steel sector to imbibe safety best practices in their workplaces. The essence of this training is all about due diligence and professionalism in the sector, not to cut corners during the production of iron and steel materials and to ensure the use of appropriate iron and steel during building construction to avert building collapse”, Mojola said

According to him, safety is key in all ramifications which is why the Government is committed to training and retraining workers in the sector, stressing that the initiative is aimed at promoting the well-being of workers towards ensuring they return home safely to their families and loved ones.

A Safety Expert, Mr. Adeyinka Adebiyi, who also spoke at the event implored companies in the sector not to use substandard materials during the production of iron and steel.

He said: “Most building collapse due to the use of substandard materials and lack of knowledge on the use of inappropriate metal and iron. For every structure, the appropriate size of the rod should be used and it must be sufficient. I also implore workers not to cut corners because life has no duplicate”.

Adebiyi further advised builders to identify and remove hazards before embarking on any project, noting that the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by workers is important to cushion the effects of accidents.

Director of Legal at the Commission, Mrs. Aderonke Adekoje also enjoined companies to avert legal issues as a result of building collapse, advising them to adhere strictly to their professional ethics, do the needful and avoid needless loss of lives and properties.
