LAGOS MARKS WORLD SAFETY DAY

The Lagos State Safety Commission today held a Safety and Health Walk to sensitize the public on Occupational Safety and Health as part of activities marking the World Day of Safety and Health with the theme: “Optimizing the collection and use of Occupational Safety and Health Data”

Lagos State Head of Service, Mrs. Olabowale Ademola while receiving the Director-General of the Safety Commission, Mr. Hakeem Dickson and his entourage after the Walk, re-emphasised the passion of the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to ensure safety in workplaces and in homes, saying “the welfare of the workforce is very dear to his Excellency”.

Mrs. Ademola used the occasion to call for the resuscitation of safety champions in all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government, reaffirming their effectiveness in entrenching safety consciousness among workers.

She congratulated the Safety Commission and advocated for more awareness on basic safety tips amongst workers and the entire residents of the State.

Mr. Hakeem Dickson while responding, said the Commission collects occupational safety and health data to help in the formulation of effective Legislation, Policies And Programmes and monitoring its implementation in the workplace.

He added that Lagos State Safety Commission, as the foremost Safety Commission in Nigeria, is proactive by engaging various stakeholders such as construction workers, event centre owners, school proprietors and manufacturers amongst others, in order to promote safety culture through sustained public enlightenment strategies and programmes with constant monitoring to ensure compliance.

He said that the World Day of Safety is observed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.
